Sometimes nothing prints. The first thing to check is the printer setup. Can the user print a test page? You must be able to do this before PrintBoss will work. Does the document print if the PrintBoss program is started first? This may be required when Terminal Services is used. Can the document print directly to the printer (i.e. not PrintBoss50)? It won’t be formatted, but is the accounting data visible? If so, you may need to re-install the PrintBoss 50 driver. Run PrintBoss\setup.exe as a Workstation\Printer Driver Install type. Lastly, what driver is being used for the printer? Is it Windows 7 or Windows 8.1 compatible? A PCL5e or PCL6 driver is recommended for PrintBoss.

When installing PrintBoss for Windows 7 or Windows 8.1, the following PrintBoss settings should be verified or changed so that the user can print.

Transfer folder:
For both Windows 7 and Windows 8 the PrintBoss Transfer File location should be {ComAppData\...\Transfer}. This setting is on the PrintBoss\Options\PrintBoss Driver Settings tab. And while this has been the default setting for a number of years, if you are updating PrintBoss from an older version or if you are installing PrintBoss on new hardware, the old setting (most commonly C:\Transfer) does NOT automatically change to the new setting. If the user cannot print, sometimes the document is not being passed from the accounting software to PrintBoss via the Transfer Folder. Changing the Transfer Folder location to one where the user has permissions can solve the issue.

Spool folder:
For both Windows 7 and Windows 8 the PrintBoss Spool Directory should be {ComAppData\...\Spool} or C:\ProgramData\Wellspring\PrintBoss\Spool. This is the default setting and will be used by PrintBoss when Win7 or Win8 is detected. However, you must restart the Print Spooler service (or reboot the workstation) in order to activate the PrintBoss 50 printer driver. Also note that a version of PrintBoss after March 2010 is required so that the most current PrintBoss 50 driver is installed.

Universal Printer Drivers:
While this is becoming less of an issue, sometimes a Universal Printer Driver has been installed and does not work with PrintBoss. The fix is to install a compatible printer driver for Win7 or Win8.

Permissions:
If the user does not permissions to all the file locations required by PrintBoss, documents will not print. Test all the required user permissions by opening PrintBoss to the Master Application. Place your cursor on the window and hold Ctrl-Shift-P. This will open the Permissions Analyzer. Note in particular the Transfer folder and Spool folder location. Verify and change the setting if necessary. Restart the print spooler service (or re-boot the workstation) before the user begins testing.

Printers:
One final check is to verify the PrintBoss 50 driver is assigned to the nul: port. Though we seldom encounter this error since delivering 5.7, clients with PrintBoss versions prior to 5.7 may run into this issue.
